This city-centre boat stay
Copenhagen
Denmark’s first floating hotel, CPHLiving is moored in the centre of Copenhagen, within easy walking distance of many of the city’s main sights.
Built onto the base of German barge, the hotel has 12 rooms with large panoramic windows – well glass walls, really – which look out over the harbour and city. Even the bathrooms are separated from the bedrooms by a window, so you enjoy waterside views while you shower!
The rooms are minimalist in style with wooden floors and decorated in calming colours. And the boat has great eco credentials too. The geothermal underfloor heating system is run by a heat pump that extracts warmth from the sea water.
So stay here and you’ll be warm in winter. When summer rolls around, you can hang out in a hammock on the large roof deck, which also offers great views.
This log cabin near Legoland
Give, near Billund
This cute, bright and modern log cabin is right near Legoland and the small town of Billund, making it an extremely handy place to base yourself.
It’s surprisingly big with around 100 sq m of floor space, and it offers easy access to the surrounding countryside – there’s a forest and fields just outside the door.
As you might expect from somewhere that’s so close to Legoland, this cabin is built with play in mind. Kids can enjoy messing around in the property’s playhouse or jumping around on the trampoline. The owners live nearby, in case you need tips on what to see and do (beyond the theme park, of course).

This jungle-style hotel
Copenhagen
The rather bland modern exterior of the Manon Les Suites hotel belies its amazing interior design. You don’t expect to find a super-cool jungle-style pool area with Balinese beds and tropical plants in the middle of Copenhagen.
But the rooms at this environmentally-friendly hotel are arranged around a central pool area, decorated in an eclectic mix of urban, tropical and African styles.
There’s also a great roof terrace with views over the city, plus a rooftop sauna, a steam room and a bucket-shower. And there’s even a boxing ring in the basement gym.
This hotel has a real ‘wow’ factor, and you’ll get enough pics to keep your Instagram account busy for weeks. So, when you’ve had enough of the cold Copenhagen winter, warm up in the tropics.
This dome-shaped house
Esbjerg
For something totally different, check out this highly unusual dome-shaped building in Esbjerg, just a short walk from the beach. You can rent the upstairs apartment of a completely round house, accessed by a spiral staircase. Even the windows are rounded!
The friendly owners live downstairs and are welcoming and very knowledgeable about the local area. Guests have access to the lovely garden, so children can run around and collect eggs from the owners’ chicken coop.
The apartment is cosy and super insulated in winter, and there’s a terrace and barbecue for summer evenings. All in all, it makes for a quirky and thoroughly charming place to stay.
This fairytale castle
Hørsholm
Built in 1746 as an aristocrat’s summer estate, Kokkedal Castle is now an upmarket hotel set in expansive grounds.
There are rooms in the castle itself and in a converted lodge across a cobbled courtyard – to get the full grand, regal experience, choose a room in the castle itself with sweeping views of the grounds or golf course.
As well as golf, there are plenty of on-site activities. You can play croquet on the lawn, relax in the spa, or take tea on the terrace – they can even organize polo lessons or a helicopter tour to pick you up from the castle grounds.
And if you’re bored of all this relaxation, it’s just a 20-minute cycle ride to the pretty Rungsted harbour and beach.
This converted water tower
Middelfart
Splash out on a stay at this beautifully converted former water tower in Middelfart. The tower has six floors and three stylish bedrooms, connected by a spiral wooden staircase.
You’ll need to be fit to get up to the wonderful round chill-out space on the top floor – but the views are definitely worth the effort.
There’s a very contemporary round kitchen on one of the floors, a dining area on another – and even a wine cellar in the basement.
This cabin in the woods
Strøby
It may be hidden away in the middle of the woods, but this 1960s cabin is beautifully furnished with large windows and classic Danish-design furniture.
The cabin looks out onto fields and woods, and is just a short walk from the beach, so you can really get back to nature here. There are bikes available to borrow, if you fancy exploring further afield.
You’ll even have to detox from social media as there no wi-fi. But you’ll soon adapt to hanging out in the hammock on a summer’s evening – or cosying up by the wood-burner in winter.
