The town of Alingsås will be especially dazzling this autumn, thanks to the return of a very special event. Each year, the City of Lights festival sees the Swedish town being adorned with a series of huge, colourful light installations that glow all the way from early October to early November.
Starting in 1998, the event has since grown to become a major highlight in the Alingsås calendar. The festival involves a team of professional lighting designers from around the world, who work with students to design the illuminated artworks.
In previous years, public buildings and spaces have acted as canvases, including the likes of Dyer’s Bridge, the Spa Building, the Telegraph Office and even the town’s old churchyard.
Visitors will find lots of other events to enjoy in Alingsås during the festival, such as seminars, poetry readings and art exhibitions.
Even kids can join in on the fun – as the event includes a light installation for children known as ‘Children’s Lights’, where some of the displays have been made by the town’s youngest bright sparks.
